The short answer
Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that there are no additional requirements to appear in them.1 The foundations are shared. The goal, the content shape and the measurement change.
The overlap
- Ranking a URL for a keyword
- Title tags and click-through rate
- Rich results
- Crawlable, indexable pages
- Helpful, accurate content
- Clear structure and headings
- Mentions on trusted sites
- Being named in the reply
- The reason the reply gives for you
- Which sources are cited
Google's guidance for both is the same at heart: content created to help people, with original information and analysis.3
Key differences
A list against a reply
A results page lets the searcher compare ten options. An answer narrows it to a few, with reasons. Being fourth in a list still gets seen; not being named in a reply does not.
You can't mark yourself as the answer
Even for featured snippets, Google says you can't mark a page to be chosen; its systems decide.2 AI answers work the same way. You make the page easy to quote; the engine picks.
Answers are assembled
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches, a “query fan-out”, to build one response.1 One question can pull from several pages, including ones that rank lower for the head keyword.
Other assistants read with their own bots
ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot to find pages.4 Blocking it in robots.txt can keep you out of those answers even if your Google rankings are fine.
One page, both jobs
You rarely need separate pages. Put the answer first for answer engines, then the depth that ranks and converts.
