What is answer engine optimization?

Short answerAnswer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content the answer, or part of it, when someone asks a question to an answer engine: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, a voice assistant or a featured snippet.

Search engines return a list of links. Answer engines return a reply. The reply names a few brands, quotes a few facts and sometimes links its sources. AEO is about being in that reply, for the questions your buyers ask.

In marketing, AEO means planning content and brand presence around those questions, then tracking whether answers actually name you. Related terms you will meet:

Where answers appear

“Answer engine” covers several surfaces. They choose answers in different ways, so it helps to know which one you are working on.

SurfaceHow the answer is chosenWhat you control
Featured snippetsGoogle's systems pick a page excerpt to show first. You can't mark a page as one.2Clear, direct passages; opt out with nosnippet or max-snippet.
AI Overviews and AI ModeGenerated from Google's index, often with a query fan-out across subtopics.1Indexable, helpful pages; Googlebot access.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, ClaudeAssistants search the web with their own crawlers, then write an answer citing sources.567Crawler access, your pages, and third-party pages that mention you.
Voice assistantsUsually read one short answer aloud.Short, plain answers to common questions.

Anatomy of an AI answer

Most AI answers have four parts you can influence. Click through them.

Do I need a CRM for a 20-person sales team?
ChatGPT

Yes, at 20 reps a shared CRM usually pays off over spreadsheets. Common picks are HubSpot, Pipedrive and Northwind CRM (the last if your reps work mostly from email).12

Notice that the reason given for your brand is part of the answer. AEO is not only being named; it is being named for the thing you want to be known for.

How to do AEO: seven steps

  1. List the questions

Collect the questions buyers ask about your category: “best X for Y”, “X vs Y”, “how do I…”, “is X worth it”. Sales calls, support tickets and search data are good sources.

  2. Check today's answers

Ask those questions across engines. Note who is named, in what order, and which pages are cited. The AI visibility checker is a quick start.

  3. Let the bots in

Answer engines can only cite what they can read. Allow search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot and Googlebot.5671 Test it with the AI crawler checker.

  4. Answer first

Put a one or two sentence answer right under the question, then the detail. Use the question as the heading.

  5. Be specific and sourced

State facts plainly: prices, who it's for, limits, comparisons. Google asks whether content provides original information and analysis.3 In the GEO research, adding citations, quotations and statistics helped visibility in generative answers.8

  6. Earn mentions where engines read

Review sites, communities and comparison articles are often cited. Make sure the ones in your category describe you fairly and correctly.

  7. Measure on a schedule

Answers change. Re-ask the same questions weekly or daily and track named rate, position, share of voice and sources.

How to measure AEO

Classic rank tracking does not tell you whether an answer names you. Measure the answers themselves.

MetricWhat it tells you
Named rateShare of answers that name your brand, per engine.
PositionWhere you appear among the brands named.
Share of voiceYour mentions against rivals for the same questions.
CitationsWhich pages the engine read, and whether they mention you.
ClicksFrom Search Console. Google includes AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic in the “Web” search type.1 A separate report shows AI impressions only.

This is the job of AI visibility tracking: the same questions asked on six engines every day, with the answers and sources kept.

Common AEO mistakes

Special fileThere is no switch. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews and AI Mode.1 An llms.txt file is optional.
Burying itA great answer in paragraph nine is hard to quote. Put it first.
Only your siteAnswers often lean on third-party pages. If review sites leave you out, so may the answer.
One checkOne answer on one day is noise. Track many questions over time.

FAQ

AEO, answered.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content the answer, or part of it, when people ask a question to Google's AI features, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, voice assistants or a featured snippet.

What is AEO in marketing?

In marketing, AEO means planning content and brand presence around the questions buyers ask answer engines, so your brand is named and your pages are cited in those answers.

Is AEO different from SEO?

AEO builds on SEO. SEO aims for a high ranking link; AEO aims to be the answer itself. Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for its AI features.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap almost entirely for AI engines. AEO is the broader, older term that also covers featured snippets and voice; GEO focuses on generative AI engines.

Does FAQ schema help AEO?

It can help machines read question-and-answer content, but Google limits FAQ rich results to well-known, authoritative government and health websites, so do not expect a visual result from it.

How do I measure AEO?

Ask the buyer questions you care about across answer engines on a schedule, and record whether you are named, your position, the sources cited and your share of voice against rivals.
