What is AI search optimization?

Short answerAI search optimization is making your pages easy for AI search engines to find, read and cite, so your brand is named when buyers ask Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude or Gemini.

Classic search ranks pages. AI search reads several pages and writes one answer. Your goal moves from "rank in the top ten" to "be one of the sources the answer is built on, and one of the brands it names".

Google treats this as part of SEO, not a separate discipline.1 So start from good SEO, then add the parts that are specific to AI answers: crawler access per engine, answer-first pages, and measuring answers rather than positions.

How AI search engines build an answer

Google describes two techniques behind its AI features. Retrieval (grounding) pulls current pages from its index to support the answer. Query fan-out runs a set of related searches at the same time to gather more results. Its own example: a question about a weedy lawn fans out into "best herbicides for lawns", "remove weeds without chemicals" and "how to prevent weeds in lawn".1

Two practical consequences. First, a page can be cited for a sub-question it answers well, even if it would not rank for the main query. Second, answers are generated fresh, so the brands named can change from day to day.

Training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) are a separate choice: blocking them opts you out of model training, not out of search.

What you can skip

Google lists several popular "hacks" that do not help with its AI features:1

llms.txtGoogle Search ignores llms.txt and other special AI files. Other services may read them; for Google they neither help nor harm.
ChunkingNo need to cut pages into tiny pieces. There is no ideal page length.
Rewriting for AIAI systems understand synonyms and meaning; you don't need every long-tail variation.
Fake mentionsSeeking inauthentic mentions isn't as helpful as it seems; spam systems filter them.
Page per variationMaking pages for every fan-out query mainly to manipulate answers breaks the scaled content abuse policy.

For a deeper look at the free file many sites add anyway, see our llms.txt generator, and read LLM SEO for engines beyond Google.

Measuring AI search optimization

Google's generative AI performance report in Search Console shows impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device and date. It does not show clicks.8

For the other engines, and for the question that matters most ("did the answer name us?"), you need answer tracking: the same questions, asked on every engine, recorded every day. That is what AY Rank's AI visibility tracking does, with the sources each answer cited.

FAQ

AI search, answered.

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization (also called AI search engine optimization) is the work of making your pages easy for AI search engines to find, read and cite, so your brand is named in their answers. It covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini.

How do I optimize for AI search?

Let each engine's search crawler read your site, keep pages indexed and eligible for snippets, publish original pages that answer buyer questions directly, earn real mentions on the sites engines cite, and re-check the same questions on a schedule.

Is AI search optimization different for each engine?

The content work is the same. Access differs: Google's AI features use Googlebot and the Search index, ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, Perplexity uses PerplexityBot and Claude uses Claude-SearchBot. Blocking one of them can keep you out of that engine's answers.

Can I stop AI from training on my site but stay in AI search?

Yes. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google separate training controls (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) from search crawling. Note Google's 30 Oct 2026 post: sites that allow Google-Extended are eligible to appear and receive clicks via grounding in Gemini Apps.

Do I need to rewrite my content for AI?

No. Google says you don't need to rewrite content just for AI, chunk it into small pieces or chase every long-tail variation; its systems understand synonyms and meaning. Write clearly for people.

How do I know if AI search optimization works?

Track named rate, position, share of voice and cited pages for a fixed set of questions over time. For Google, Search Console's generative AI report shows impressions of your links in AI features.
