What are Google AI Overviews?

Short answerTo rank in AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet; Google says there are no other requirements. Then it needs to be the clearest, most original answer to the question or one of its sub-questions.1

AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries Google shows above some results, with links to the pages that support them. AI Mode is the conversational version for longer questions and follow-ups. Google's guidance covers both together.1

Who is eligible

There is no application and no special tag. A page can be shown as a supporting link if it is indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.1 Google's 2026 guide adds that a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console, which is the default for every property.25

IndexedThe page is in Google's index. Check it with URL Inspection in Search Console.
Snippet-eligibleNo nosnippet on the page, and max-snippet not set so low that nothing can be shown.
IncludedThe Search Console generative AI setting is left on "include" (the default).

How Google picks the supporting links

Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems. They retrieve relevant, up-to-date pages from the Search index and may use a query fan-out: several related searches across subtopics, run at once.21

The overview cites three pages; one of them is the brand's comparison page. Example data · sample brand.

So the pages cited are not always the ones ranking first for the main query. A comparison page, a pricing explainer or an FAQ that answers one sub-question well can earn the link.

How to rank in AI Overviews: seven steps

  1. Fix eligibility

Indexed, snippet-eligible, not excluded in Search Console. Nothing else matters until this is true.

  2. Map the sub-questions

For each buyer question, list what a careful answer needs: price, fit, alternatives, limits. Each is a fan-out search.

  3. Answer them on your pages

Short, direct answers under clear headings. Google says there is no need to chunk content or write "for AI".2

  4. Make it non-commodity

First-hand experience, your own data and a clear point of view. Google calls this the biggest long-run factor in its guide.2

  5. Keep structured data honest

Not required, but useful for rich results. It must match the visible text.1

  6. Add images and video where useful

Google's AI features can show relevant images and video, which means more chances to appear.2

  7. Use Merchant Center and Business Profile

For products and local businesses, these feed product and business details into AI responses.2

And the opposite: don't create a page for every fan-out query mainly to influence answers. Google says that breaks its scaled content abuse policy.2 Write for people first; Google's helpful-content guidance still applies.6

The controls you have

ControlEffect
nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippetLimit what Google can show from a page or a part of it, including in AI features.1
noindexKeeps the page out of Search, and so out of AI features.1
Search Console settingExclude the site's links and content from Search generative AI features. Default: include.5
Google-ExtendedLimits AI training and grounding in some of Google's other systems; it is not the control for AI Overviews.1

Measuring AI Overviews in Search Console

Since June 2026, Search Console has a Generative AI performance report, rolled out to all sites on 31 Aug 2026. It shows impressions of your URLs in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date; the same data still counts in the overall Performance report.3 It reports impressions, not clicks.4

What it cannot tell you is the answer itself: which brands were named, in what order, and whether you were one of them. For that you need to read the answers. AY Rank checks AI Overviews and AI Mode for your buyer questions every day; see the AI Overview tracker and AI Mode tracker.

FAQ

AI Overviews, answered.

How do I rank in AI Overviews?

Make sure the page is indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, answer the question and its sub-questions directly with original, specific content, keep structured data matching the visible text, and follow normal SEO best practices. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations.

Do I need special markup or an llms.txt file for AI Overviews?

No. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup, and that structured data isn't required for its generative AI features, though it still helps with rich results.

How does Google choose the links in an AI Overview?

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use retrieval from its Search index and may use a query fan-out, running related searches across subtopics to find supporting pages. A page that answers one sub-question well can be cited.

Can I keep my site out of AI Overviews?

Yes. Use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex to limit what Google shows, or the Search console setting that excludes a site from Search generative AI features. Inclusion is the default.

How do I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Search Console's Generative AI performance report shows impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. It reports impressions, not clicks. The same data is also counted in the overall Performance report.

Is AI Overviews SEO different from AI Mode SEO?

Google gives the same guidance for both: the same eligibility, the same controls and the same reporting. AI Mode answers longer conversations, so pages that answer follow-up questions have more chances to be cited.
