FAQ

Questions, answered.

What does the redirect checker show?

For each address: every redirect hop with its status code, the final address and its status, and issues such as chains of several redirects, temporary redirects, http on the way, errors at the end, a canonical pointing elsewhere or a noindex.

301 or 302?

Use 301 (or 308) when a page has moved for good, so engines move its signals to the new address. 302 and 307 say the move is temporary.

Why are redirect chains a problem?

Each hop is a request crawlers must follow. Long chains slow them down, and some stop after a few hops. Point old addresses straight to the final page.

How many addresses can I check?

Up to 10 at once, each followed for up to 8 hops.

Does it work for any site?

Any public website. Private and internal addresses are refused.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up. Results are kept for 7 days; use “Check again” after a change.
