AI SEO: rank in search, get named in answers

What AI SEO means, the three layers that decide whether AI engines name you, and a workflow you can run every week.

What is AI SEO?

Short answerAI SEO is search engine optimization for a world where many questions end in an AI answer. The aim is to be read, trusted and named by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, as well as to rank in classic results.

People use the phrase in two ways, and both are worth knowing:

SEO for AI answers

Getting your brand named and your pages cited inside AI answers. This is what this guide is about, and what others call GEO or AEO.

AI for doing SEO

Using AI tools to research, brief, draft or audit. Useful, with limits; see using AI for SEO below.

Google's own view is plain: optimizing for its generative AI features is optimizing for search, so it is still SEO.1 The work is familiar. The target is new: one of the few brands an answer names, ideally with your page as a cited source.

The three layers of AI SEO

Every AI answer that uses the web follows roughly the same path: find pages, judge them, then write an answer that names a few brands. Each step is a layer you can work on.

01
Be readableSearch bots allowed, pages indexed and eligible for a snippet.
Technical
02
Be the best sourceOriginal, specific pages that answer the question directly.
Content
03
Be namedMentioned fairly where engines read: reviews, comparisons, communities.
Reputation
Fix the layers in order. A blocked bot makes great content invisible to that engine.

1. Be readable

For Google's AI features, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet; there are no extra technical requirements.2 Other engines use their own crawlers, so robots.txt decides whether they can read you at all (more below).

2. Be the best source

Google says creating unique, non-commodity content will likely matter more to your presence in generative AI search than anything else in its guide.1 In practice: first-hand experience, clear facts (price, who it's for, limits), and comparisons you can stand behind. In the GEO research paper, methods such as adding citations, quotations and statistics improved visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing did not help.8

3. Be named

Answers draw on what the web says about you: review sites, forums, comparison articles, videos. Google notes its AI features can show what's being said across blogs, videos and forums, and warns that seeking inauthentic mentions isn't as helpful as it seems.1 Earn real mentions where rivals are already listed and you are not.

What Google says about AI SEO

Google published a full guide to its generative AI features in 2026. The useful parts, in short:1

Still SEOIts AI features are rooted in its core ranking and quality systems, using retrieval and a query fan-out of related searches.
No special filesYou don't need llms.txt, AI text files or special markup for Google; Google Search ignores them.
No chunkingThere is no need to split content into tiny pieces or rewrite it "for AI".
Structured dataNot required for generative AI search, but still useful for rich results. Keep it matching the visible text.2
Opt-out existsSearch Console has a control to include or exclude a site from its generative AI features; inclusion is the default.

Google also recommends checking advice and tools against its guidance: no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems.1 That includes us. What a tool like AY Rank can do is ask engines the same questions every day and record what they answer.

The other engines read with their own bots

ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity send their own crawlers. Each company splits search bots from training bots, so you can stay in answers while opting out of model training:

BotWhat it doesBlock it and…
OAI-SearchBotSurfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features.3Not shown in ChatGPT search answers (navigational links may remain).
GPTBotCrawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models.3Opted out of training only.
Claude-SearchBotImproves search result quality for Claude users.4May reduce your visibility in Claude's search results.
ClaudeBotCollects content that may help train Anthropic's models.4Opted out of training only.
PerplexityBotSurfaces and links sites in Perplexity; not used for model training.5Perplexity recommends allowing it to appear in results.

Using AI for SEO, safely

AI tools are good at the slow parts of SEO: grouping questions, drafting outlines, summarizing what rivals cover, checking pages against a brief. Google allows AI-assisted content when the work meets its Search Essentials and spam policies.1

Works

Drafts edited by someone who knows the subject. Facts checked. A clear byline and an honest note on how the page was made, which Google's "Who, How, and Why" questions ask for.7

Backfires

A page for every variation of a query, made mainly to manipulate rankings or AI answers. Google calls that scaled content abuse.1

AY Rank's content autopilot follows the first column: it drafts pages from your plan, fact-checks them, and nothing is published until you approve it.

A weekly AI SEO workflow

  1. Pick the questions that sell

"Best X for Y", "X vs Y", "alternatives to Y", "is X good for Z". Write them from your offer, your buyers and your rivals.

  2. Read today's answers

Ask each engine. Note who is named, in what order, and which pages are cited.

  3. Fix readability first

Unblock search bots, fix indexing and snippet blocks. These are the fastest wins.

  4. Close one content gap

Publish or improve the page an answer should have cited: a comparison, a pricing explainer, a clear "who it's for".

  5. Earn one fair mention

Find a source engines cite that lists rivals but not you, and give it a reason to include you.

  6. Re-ask and keep score

Same questions, same engines, every week. Keep what moved the numbers.

How to measure AI SEO

Answers change from one run to the next, so measure many questions on a schedule, never one answer once.

MetricWhat it tells youWhere to get it
Named rateShare of answers that name your brand.Answer tracking
PositionWhere you appear when named.Answer tracking
Share of voiceYour mentions against rivals in the same answers.Answer tracking
Cited pagesWhich pages engines read, and whether they name you.Answer tracking
AI impressionsHow often Google showed your links in AI features.Search Console

Search Console's generative AI performance report shows impressions of your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode; it does not report clicks.6 It also covers only Google. Answer tracking fills the rest: AY Rank asks your questions on six engines every day. See how AI visibility tracking works or create an account.

FAQ

AI SEO, answered.

What is AI SEO?

AI SEO is search engine optimization aimed at AI answers as well as classic results: making sure engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews can read your pages, find them useful, and name your brand. The term is also used for using AI tools to do SEO work.

Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?

It builds on it. Google says the best practices for SEO remain relevant for its generative AI features and that optimizing for them is still SEO. What changes is the goal: being one of the few brands an answer names, not only a high link.

Do I need an llms.txt file or special markup for AI SEO?

Not for Google. Google's guide says you don't need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in its generative AI features, and that structured data isn't required. Other services may read llms.txt, so it can't hurt, but it is not a switch.

Can I use AI to write SEO content?

Yes, if the result is helpful and original. Google says AI-assisted content must meet its Search Essentials and spam policies, and that mass-producing pages mainly to manipulate rankings or AI responses breaks its scaled content abuse policy.

How do I measure AI SEO?

Track a fixed set of buyer questions across engines on a schedule: how often you are named, your position, your share of voice against rivals, and which pages are cited. Search Console's generative AI report adds Google impressions, but it counts impressions only.

How long does AI SEO take?

Crawler fixes can show quickly; OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply to its systems. Content and reputation work takes longer and varies, which is why you measure the same questions over weeks rather than once.
