The short answer
Google says SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no special optimization is needed to appear in them.1 So the foundations are shared. What changes is the goal, the unit you track and some of the work.
What stays the same
- Ranking a URL for a keyword
- Click-through rate
- Rich results
- Pages bots can crawl and index
- Clear, helpful, accurate content
- Fast, well-structured pages
- Mentions on trusted sites
- Being named in the answer
- Position among named brands
- Which sources AI cites
If search engines can't crawl or index a page, AI engines that rely on search can't use it either. Google's AI features draw on its normal Search index.1
What changes
Questions, not keywords
People ask AI full questions: “best CRM for a 20-person team that lives in Gmail”. Plan content around those questions, not only short keywords.
The answer is assembled
AI engines combine several sources into one reply. Google describes a “query fan-out” that runs related searches behind a single question.1 Your page competes to be one of the sources, and your brand to be one of the names.
Third-party pages weigh more
Answers often cite review sites, communities and comparison articles. Being fairly described there can matter as much as your own page.
What helps content differs
In the original GEO research, adding cited sources, quotations and statistics improved visibility, while keyword stuffing did not.2
Measuring each
SEO has mature tools: Search Console for clicks and impressions, rank trackers for positions.
GEO needs answer-level data. Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the normal “Web” search type, without a separate click filter.1 Since June 2026 a separate generative AI performance report shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode, but not clicks. To know if you're named, ask the same questions across engines on a schedule and record the answers.
| Question | SEO tool | GEO tool |
|---|---|---|
| Do people find my page? | Search Console | Search Console (AI traffic included, not split) |
| Am I named by ChatGPT? | — | AI visibility tracker |
| Which sources does AI cite? | — | AI visibility tracker |
| Can AI bots read my site? | robots.txt tester | AI crawler checker |
